Monsters Inc. Tryouts

I was watching Sourcefed, which is a channel on youtube and they asked the viewers to send them drawings of monster version of us. So I've been in a rut for a couple of months so I thought this would be a great way to get back on the bandwagon.

If you've seen me before you know that I always wear my good luck orange beanie and usually have some headphones strap on me. I thought having my eyes extend out of my beanie would be a nice touch. Also my favorite colors are blue and orange. So yeah this is me in monster form. I'll send in the rest of the sketches later on.

More Dwarfs and Elves

This branched from my earlier project, I couldn't just put it down. So this became an ongoing personal project for me, creating a fantasy character roster. I drastically changed up my designs from before and took out the modern timeline and completely set the premise in fantasy but with modern quirks.

First I started out doing the warrior look but I thought it was interesting enough

Went through a couple designs

Almost went with this but I still wasn't satisfied....

I wanted to create a dwarf that was very different from the standard dwarf. No longer is he manly, tough and aggressive. Instead he's very geeky, into reading books and not very good at fighting but likes to create stats for monsters and enemies in his books.

The started out similar to my previous elves, still pretty happy and well dressed.

I started exploring more nerdy looks, something that would distinguish him

I liked this style but I wanted a attitude that contrasted my dwarf character

I wanted the opposite for the elf as well, instead of the usual elf which is one with nature and good with a bow, this elf hates the outdoors and is a user of dark magic.

Touch ups on the characters with added color and shading. I want to create a whole character roster of fantasy characters also layouts of their world. Like I said this is still an ongoing project.

Romeo and Juliet -Redux: Character Design

This was a project where I needed to adapt a Shakespeare play into a modern adaptation. My story was Romeo and Juliet but loosely adapted into a t.v. animation about Dwarfs and Elves except set in modern times. As I went further along though, it became less about romance and more action and comedic oriented.

At first I tried making Juliet a dwarf girl, who was tough, stubborn and aggressive. In modern times she would be a tomboyish girl, that would would very motivated and take no crap from anyone.

The Romeo character would be an elf, charismatic, and good looking. In modern times he would be the popular kid, probably a jock or a ladies man.
The Orcs and ogres would be greasers and part of the bad crowd.

I got inspiration from West Side Story and Grease for my character designs and how the story would work for Romeo and Juliet. I ended up scrapping the idea because I didn't think it would work well with a young audience, I needed more action and less drama/romance.

I ended up going with a very loose adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, instead of romance it's friendship and instead of  a dispute between two families it's instead a dispute between two races: Dwarfs and Elves.

The two heroes would be polar opposites of each other:

The Elf, Rumil is more easy going, always happy, while Jorfinn would be stern and constantly angry. In battle though they make the greatest warriors together.

Jorfinn is a top heavy warrior, wears a warrior's mohawk, heavy armor, loves to wield an ax and get up close and personal with his enemies. In modern times he would be an outcast because of his stubborn attitude and get into fights. He would make a great football player as well.

Rumil is more lanky, and flexible, his hair is more stylized, wears a cloak and but he doesn't like to get his hands dirty so he fights from afar with his trust bow and arrow. In modern times he would also be an outcast because of his over eager personality that would irritate the more jaded 21st century humans. He's over the top personality makes him great at theater.

The enemies of Rumil and Jorfinn would be the mysterious war monger, The Ogre General and his army of minions.

I wanted to create a believably intimidating villain that the heroes have to face. The Ogre General would follow them to the modern world causing havoc.

I thought the armor would give him an intimidate air about him.

Got to have a intimidating weapon, what better than a spiked paddle sword that's on fire?

The best chair is a chair of minions.

I decided in the final design I needed to enhance the horns, added spikes and skulls on his waist. Also his feet became more demonic like.

The Ogre General is ruthless commander in the world of fantasy, has the ability to summon weapons to vanquish his victims.

The Ogre General has an army of minions, they're bumbling, clumsy and foolish but what they lack in every other area they make up in countless quantity.

I really enjoyed creating the dwarf family, giving them their own quirks and qualities.

The elf family was little more tougher, I still need to work on my skinnier characters. My stout characters though came across real well. Overall this project was one of the funnest I've done in my time at AAU.

The Exterminator: Character Designs

These are my character designs for a short film that I worked on on my final semester.

The premise was a battle between the forces of good and evil except the problem is, both characters can figure out which one is which. The Exterminator is about a retired ex-Bug Exterminator who mistakenly takes a local superhero as a giant bug because of the hero's costume.

Retired Exterminator:

I wanted my exterminator to look like an old man, someone who would believably confuse a man in  spandex for a bug.

I gave him long eyelashes, big eyes and a short stature to really drive home the connection he has with insects. His hair also started to resemble fly wings.

I wanted him to be able to move quick and spontaneous so I started to give him a pill like form and shorter limbs that can move fast.

This became his look, with very animated eyebrows, limbs capable of moving fast and big glasses emphasizing his deteriorating eyesight.

In his exterminator suit his eyebrows still standout and he wears a gas mask making him look even more bug like.

Bug Hero:

The hero I had in mind was a very stereotypical type of super strong superhero. I took references from the Tick, I had in mind a superhero would looks heroic but can be arrogant and jumps the gun.

For the insect design I decided to go with the Flea and gave the superhero, super jumping powers

Even though both characters have bug like qualities, they are totally opposite in appearance and demeanor.

In battle the room that they fight in becomes heavily obscured by bug gas making the two characters' imagination run wild as they mistaken the other for a bad guy.

The exterminator ends up looking like one of the hero's villains and is out to get him.

The Hero ends up looking like some bug monster from hell out to get the hapless exterminator.

Overall I had a great time designing these characters.
